Amazon Prime Video is available on many devices such as phones, tablets, games consoles, smart TVs, and Blu-ray players. Mostly video streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and others work well and provide the highest quality when you have an unlimited data plan or Wi-Fi connection. If you've got a limited internet plan, it is best to adjust video quality settings on various devices to restrict data usage. Fortunately, Amazon Prime Video provides its users several viewing or downloading options to choose from.


How to reduce Amazon Prime data usage when STREAMING on phone


Here’s a step-by-step guide to save your data when streaming your favorite show or movie on your phone:

  1. Open the Amazon Prime Video app on your mobile and log in your account.

  2. Go to “My Stuff”.

3. Click on the “Settings” icon in top right corner.

4. Select “Stream & Download” option.

5. Select “Streaming Quality.” As you can see there are some other options available as well like Download or Stream on WiFi only, Notify when watching in mobile data, etc.

6. You’ll have 4 options to choose from; Best 1.82GB/hr, Better 0.72GB/hr, Good 0.18GB/hr and Data Saver 0.12GB/hr.


Note: The settings vary from device to device. They won’t automatically work on other shared devices at homes such as mobile phones of your family members, your smart TV, tablet or other.


How to reduce Amazon Prime data usage when DOWNLOADING on a phone or tablet


1. Go back to “Stream & Download” and select “Download quality.”

2. You’ll have a number of options to choose from.

  • Best: 1 hour of video uses about 1.82 GB of data

  • Better: 1 hour of video uses about 0.72 GB of data

  • Good: 1 hour of video uses about 0.18 GB of data

  • Data Saver: 1 hour of video uses about 0.12 GB of data

  • Always ask: Select quality for every download

How to reduce Amazon Prime data usage when CASTING through phone on TV/LED


Amazon Prime Video also offers a casting option to watch your favorite tv show on your TV or Chromecast. As TVs have bigger screen sizes than mobile phones, so the videos require more data to play.


1. Go back to “Stream & Download” and select “Cast Data Usage.”

2. You’ll have three options; Unlimited, Balanced 1.80GB/hr, and Data Saver 0.70GB/hr.

How to reduce Amazon Prime data usage when Streaming on Desktop or Laptop

The great on-demand video streaming platform only allows streaming on desktop or laptop computers and doesn’t provide the downloading option.


1. Login to your Prime Video account on PC.

2. Play the movie or TV show you want to watch.

3. Click on the gear icon. You’ll have 3 options to choose from:

  • Good: 0.38 GB per hour (use for saving data)

  • Better: 1.40 GB per hour

  • Best: 6.84GB per hour (better to use on WiFi)


You can now enjoy your favorite TV shows and movies on Prime Video without worrying about data usage. Please note that video quality settings are device-specific. Settings on one device won’t automatically change them on all the devices even if you’re logged in from the same account.
